Beyond Survival: How to Combat Compassion Fatigue and Burnout

CEUs Available: 2

Presentation Description: Compassion fatigue can strike the most caring and dedicated nurses, social workers, physicians, victim advocates and personal support workers alike.  These changes can affect both their personal and professional lives with symptoms such as difficulty concentrating, intrusive imagery, loss of hope, exhaustion and irritability.  It can also lead to profound shifts in the way helpers view the world and their loved ones.  Additionally, helpers may become dispirited and increasingly cynical at work, they may make clinical errors, violate client boundaries, lose a respectful stance towards their clients and contribute to a toxic work environment.

Objectives:

  1. Participants will learn how to assess their own level of compassion fatigue.
  2. Participants will be able to develop an early warning system for themselves.
  3. Participants will learn ways to rebalance their workload to address or reduce compassion fatigue.

The Analysis of Patterns of Denial Among Sex Offenders

Presentation Description: In this training, Dr. Turner provides training in the Analysis of Patterns of Denial (APOD), a research based instrument for use in interviewing and interrogating adults suspected of sex offenses.  The instrument was created by analysis of interviews and interrogations made with adult male suspects accused of sexual offenses who are falsely accused (as proven by DNA, another suspect charged, passing polygraph, etc.).  These interviews are compared with interviews of suspects who have been convicted of a sex offense yet still deny their guilt.  These two groups represent, in the research, an “falsely accused” group versus a “guilty” group.

The research has examined 12 denial response patterns that are frequently utilized by guilty sex offenders who continue to lie and deny their guilt (ex., blaming someone else for the abuse, claiming memory loss, denigrating the victim).  Findings have shown that the way in which innocent persons truthfully deny their guilt is fundamentally different from the way guilty individuals do so, especially in the context of sex offenses.  The instrument is helpful to anyone who works with this population to include mental health professionals, law enforcement, attorney, and community supervisors.  While no instrument can never be perfectly accurate, it will provide a scientific tool to law enforcement that will allow them to confront suspects with data backed by science.

The training in the patterns of deception and denial uses videos of interviews with actual offenders engaging in these denial techniques.  The origins and purpose of the instrument will be explored, and each of the items on the instrument will be discussed in detail with examples shown.

Objectives:

  1. Understand the 12 denial response patterns use by sex offenders.
  2. Learn about the APOD and its use in interviewing and interrogating adults suspected of sex offenses.
  3. Apply the response patterns and instrument to real world examples.

Matters of the Heart: Learning About Our Human Sexuality

Presentation Description: Matters of the Heart walks attendees through the complexities and also simplicities of human sexuality. Through storytelling, the audience will be guided on a journey that explores human growth and development and how we are impacted and influenced by families, peers and communities. In a society that is on the brink of shifting how we view and treat one another based on our sexuality, storyteller Ryan Sallans will close with the importance of both challenging and supporting people in our lives, and how we can better serve our younger generations by shifting from allyship to friendship.

Objectives:

  1. Recall the differences between sex assigned at birth, gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation.
  2. Recall the impact and outcomes family acceptance or rejection have on LGBTQ individuals.
  3. Employ strategies that improve communication skills and support services for LGBTQ youth.

A Look Into the Roots of Racism in Omaha: How It Impacts the Health and Wellness of Our Patients and Families

Presentation Description: The practice of systemic racism and civic policies that advance inequity have lasting consequences. This presentation unpacks the enduring impact of redlining and other formal and informal practices on health and education. Dr. Stoolman, an Omaha native, explores issues of access and how indigenous people and people of color in Omaha have been, and still are, affected. As we are in the midst of a national reckoning regarding racial injustice, learn about how we arrived where we are today, locally. This training will increase your understanding of how your current assumptions may not take into consideration the factors that create hurdles for children and families.

Objectives:

  1. Participants will define redlining, medical and food deserts, and educational inequities in Omaha.
  2. Participants will describe how social determinants have an enduring impact on all aspects of health.
  3. Participants will identify elements of systemic racism and strategies for creating change.
